(More customer reviews)These are the diapers that make up the bulk of my collection for several reasons.
Number one..they work very well and are very easy to use. They have 8 layers of flannel PLUS a hidden waterproof layer. I have been able to use these diapers day an night without leaking. They do however reach a saturation point and many people prefer to use a cover at night. I did that for a while also. These plus the cover (I loved the Taffeta) are very leak-proof for nighttime. The taffeta was outgrown a little bit sooner than the diaper..so if your baby is 18 or 19 pounds, get the next size up.
Number two, they are soft..not just for baby..but for those holding baby. I bought samples in the newborn size of the Ultra and I was very turned off by the stiffness of the fabric. They just did not feel like something I wanted to put on my newborn baby. I do like them in the infant and toddler sizes, tho. Maybe not in love with them..but they are the most durable and most leak-proof..I often grab them for night time. Still, I LOVE the softness of the CLASSICS No plasticy feel!
Number three, they are CHEAP! For about $8 a peice when you spend about $40 on a five pack, these are SO much cheaper than many other high quality all in ones out there! Bumkins cost about $25 a peice!!! Bumkins are VERY similiar to the Kushies Ultra Light by the way..but the Ultralights are cheaper and every bit as good. Don't waste your money.
Number four, they are TRIM! These are not big and bulky
Number five, they fold easily! Ease of laundering must be taken into consideration, because the ease of laundering can make or break your love of cloth diapering! The ultras and ultra lights have narrower, trimmer crotches, but are a pain in the neck to stack! Classics fold square and can be stacked easily to put on a shelf or in a drawer. They lay level and don't tip. The ultra and ultra lights do not stack well.
Number six, great fit! These diapers will fit your baby from about 8 weeks of age until around the first birthday. There were a couple of months that I was worried my chunky baby was going to grow out of these prematurely..I could just barely secure the velcro without letting the scratchy part touch her skin..but I persevered and she reached the second half of the first year and passed the super chunky phase...and they began fitting better again. Babies do tend to thin out a bit during the second half of the first year. So if you find your baby about to bust out at 6 or 7 months, don't worry. Chances are her proportions will soon change and they will still fit!!
Drawback: These classics will deteriorate more quickly than the ultra or ultra lights. The first place you will find them deteriorating is the leg openings..where the elastic stretches and restretches. The fabric where they made a poor excuse for a gusset is thinner than anywhere else in the diaper and that is where the holes begin and the front and back layers of the diapers begin to separate. They do not attempt any fake gusseting with the ultra and ultralights..so you don't have as much of a problem..plus the cotton is somewhat protected by the tougher outter fabric. The other area that you will soon see falling apart is the waistline..just above the thick waist band is a thinner bit of fabric. That will soon fall off. Now, I didn't baby by diapers. I washed them in cold with Dreft and dried them on low. Maybe if I had babied them, they would have lasted longer. But if you do what I did, you're looking at a lifespan of 6 or 7 months..I started using them when my baby was 2 months and she is now 9 months. I would recomend using a partial wetpail. Rinse and wring the diaper in the bathroom sink to dilute the urine, then toss the wet diaper in a dry pail. I had been doing this. Then I started getting lazy and just throwing the pee diaper straight into the dry pail. They started falling apart shortly after. Maybe the undiluted urine ate away at the diapers. Not sure. You may be able to get more life out of yours. Another drawback is the occassional diaper chain..velcro straps getting stuck together. I don't have this problem too often, but it can be annoying. It would be more annoying if these diapes cost $25 a peice, tho. For $8 a peice..I can put up with the occassional chain! :) These do have a fold-down design that helps prevent this from happening. And I have to say the velcro has held up VERY nicely. No problems there at all!
